The Frisch School Middle States Reaccreditation

I am happy to inform you that the visit of the Middle States team has just concluded and we have been informed that it is the team's unanimous recommendation that The Frisch School be reaccredited by the Middle States Association of Schools. The team was impressed with the spirit and dynamism which permeates our campus and with the professionalism and enthusiasm of faculty and staff. What impressed our visitors the most is exactly what impresses all of us at Frisch the most, that is, the intelligence, mentschlichkeit and Ru'ach of our kids and the mutual love and respect the students and the teachers have for one another and for the yeshiva.

Thank you to the members of the Board and parents who participated in various aspects of the study, to the faculty and staff who were so impressive not despite but because they just ran a regular week of school with all the special stuff that goes on in and out of the classroom at Frisch every week.

The Message Behind Frisch's The Alumni

The following posting by Rabbi Tzvi Pittinsky, our Director of Educational Technology, is cross-posted from his blog, techrav.blogspot.com.
I have been in the midst of helping to coordinate our get-out-the-vote drive for the Avi Chai Foundation's Jewish Day School Video Academy Awards: Alumni Edition. ---Here's my PSA: If you have not already done so, please vote for our entry in this contest by going to video.frisch.org and giving Frisch's The Alumni a "Thumb's Up".--- What I have learned is that this contest is not just a great lesson in digital storytelling and the art of social media but has also been a tremendous boost for our school spirit and a great model for our student's of all the values that we hold dear.

Let me explain. Frisch's entry Frisch's The Alumni is another first class production from our team of talented faculty alumni filmmakers, Rabbi David Goldfischer and Rabbi Jonathan Feldman who in the past have produced such popular hits as The Fiddler on the School and The Sound of Ruach. When you watch the current video side-by-side with the Avenger's Assemble movie trailer it is spoofing- I have embedded both videos below- you realize how clever this video truly is. However, it is much more...

By featuring twelve alumni who have chosen to rejoin our school as Frisch faculty, this video is a tremendous model for our students of the importance of service and giving back to the Jewish community. The values we preach, we teach and follow ourselves. Full disclosure: I am NOT a Frisch alumnus although many of my friends in high school went to Frisch (I was kind of jealous of them), I have taught in Frisch for eleven years, and now I am the proud parent of two current Frisch students.

During our drive Thursday to get our students to vote, I realized how remarkable a message this is. "Please support your Frisch faculty alumni by voting for our video because one day you will be a Frisch alumnus and they might make a video about you and how you are giving back to the Jewish community!" What an incredible message! And the kids responded and voted and voted. Over 250 student voters in one hour. (The candy we were handing out didn't hurt.) But what our kids were truly voting for was their deep respect for their alumni teachers and their desire some day, in some way to follow in their footsteps.

So please share this video below with your friends and family. Not because we want your vote- although we do, don't forget video.frisch.org- but because in its over-the-top, funny way, it shares such an important message that our Modern Orthodox Jewish world needs now more than ever; the importance of giving back to our Jewish community. This is the ultimate way that we can show our hakarat hatov, thankfulness, for all those who have given so much to make us into committed and thoughtful Jewish individuals.

Below is Frisch's The Alumni:

And the Avengers Assemble trailer that it is spoofing. Enjoy the videos and the message!

Yesterday's first ever Engineering Symposium at Frisch

June 1, 2012
Dear Parents,

What an amazing event we had yesterday at Frisch!  The excitement and enthusiasm of all the students was evident as Frisch held the first ever Engineering Symposium. Attended by over 100 students and faculty from five area schools, this event was the culmination of our science engineering elective. Here are pictures from the event: SciTech Engineering Conference at Frisch

Throughout the year, the passion and energy of the students could be witnessed daily in our engineering lab as students worked diligently in teams under the able guidance of Mrs. Rifkie Silverman to acquire the skills and conceptual understanding of what it means to be an engineer.  This elective course, which was supported by the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education, will be offered to both 9th and 10th graders next year.

As is always the case, our students can best describe what the year was like for them.  Below is an excerpt from an article written by Benjamin Glass (’14).

“Over the course of this year, I have gained an immeasurable amount from our class. At the start of the year, programming was an enigma to me, and potentiometer was a term from science fiction. Today, the secrets of these terms are open to me. Our work in class with Arduino microprocessors has led me to begin learning JAVA on my own, and I will be taking a class in C programming this summer at Columbia. From the students of the Frisch engineering class: a hearty thanks to Mrs. Silverman, who put her all into directing us throughout the year, and to Dr. Furman who helped get the engineering class off the ground along with Mrs. Silverman”

As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Below please enjoy this exceptional videography produced by our budding young filmmaker as well as a member of the engineering class, Tamar  Palgon ('14).

I am looking forward to continued science exploration with your children next year.

Our Third Annual Sports Breakfast

Dear Parents,

The Third Annual Cougar Sports Breakfast was held yesterday with more than 300 students, parents, siblings and coaches in attendance.

Those attending enjoyed an amazing breakfast-including sports-themed cupcakes and strawberries- prepared by our very own Cougar Café chefs and staff.

Our Keynote Speaker, Mr. Richard Bernstein, an attorney and advocate for the rights of the disabled who has been blind since birth, provided our students and parents with an inspiring message about overcoming adversity. Mr. Bernstein spoke about his personal  experience as a marathon and triathlon participant, as well as his work on behalf of the disabled, including working with the Israeli army to include disabled young men and women in army service.

Mr. Bernstein received a standing ovation from the overflow crowd as he was presented with an array of Cougar  paraphernalia to be taken back to his home state of Michigan.

Following the Mr. Bernstein's remarks, Dr. Stein recognized the student athletes and coaches of our 27 teams and acknowledged the important supporting role all parents play in ensuring their children’s regular participation in our athletics program.

We look forward to welcoming you all at next year’s breakfast.

Today's Yom Ha'atzmaut Program

Dear Parents:

There are some days that are just magical and at The Frisch School Yom Ha-Atzma’ut ought to be one of those days. And today was absolutely wonderful day, a day during which I just stood in the background and observed with pride the talents of our faculty and the Ru’ach, intelligence, and camaraderie of our students.

We began yesterday with our Yom HaZikaron program designed by the Ivrit Department to insure that each of us entered today’s festivities with a clear sense of the price the soldiers and citizens of Medinat Yisrael have paid to create and defend the Jewish State.

Our goal each year on Yom Ha-Atzma’ut is to put together a program which includes not only celebration, thanksgiving, and Ru’ach but also substantive, thought-provoking intellectual content. Rabbi David Goldfischer, our director of student activities, made sure that we hit on all cylinders today.

We began with a beautiful Tefilah Chagigit, including an incredibly joyful rendition of Hallel in which virtually every student in the school participated. After our traditional breakfast of blue and white sheet cake,  we adjourned to our classrooms to learn about Rav Avraham Yitzchak Kook’s little-known Hesped (eulogy) for Theodor Herzl through which he attempted to demonstrate, in a Dvar Torah elucidating the roles in our tradition of Mashi’ach Ben Yosef and Mashi’ach Ben David, that religious Zionists should look upon secular Zionism (and, of course, Zionists) as an indispensible ingredient working toward the ultimate redemption of the Jewish People.
The theme of the day was an appreciation of the combination of the spiritual and physical, the religious and secular elements of Zionism during the last century which led to the creation and the magnificent achievements of Medinat Yisrael. So after reconvening to see a film about the struggle for and the development of the State each grade was treated in round robin style to each four presentations:

1.      Needless to say, Rav Kook’s Hesped for Herzl evoked a storm of protest within the rabbinical world in 1904. Our students got to hear Rav Kook’s spirited defense of his position as presented by Rabbis Jaffe and Fleischmann. (Rav Kook explained using the double meaning of the work Chol—either sand or that which is secular—to argue that the creation of a State and of the Kedusha inherent in a Jewish State begins with a grain of physicality and with the secular activity of creating the economic and political infrastructure).

2.      The presentation of a medal for military heroism to a member of a Hesder unit (played by Rabbi Blau) and the cynicism, actually the very funny cynicism of the non-religious officer bestowing the award: As in, “How does a Talmud Scholar defeat the enemy? Do you bore them to death?” The kids loved that one, courtesy of our resident wit, Rabbi Jonathan Feldman. The presentation included a superbly made film by Yeshivat Har Etzion about a Chassidic story often told by its late Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Amital which highlighted the importance of combining Torah with service to the community.

3.      Did you happen to notice the photos of the infancy of Tel Aviv which were shown during the one hundredth anniversary of its founding? Tel Aviv growth into a major cultural center and as a high tech area second only to Silicon Valley reflects the achievements of century of Zionists of all striped. Rabbi David Sher, who spearheads our Israel education program and who works hard to make sure that our kids see Israel’s achievements and glory, not just its struggle and needs, did a superb job in presenting Tel Aviv to our students.

4.      Even with the right glasses and powder in his hair Rabbi Ciner doesn’t look much like Menachem Begin but he certainly sounded like him as he presented Begin’s speech on Kniesset arguing that El Al should not be permitted to fly on Shabbat. The powerful speech, and the heckling by MK’s Rabbis Schachter, Bashist and Zauderer, gave the students a glimpse of the sometimes contentious issue of religion in Medinat Yisrael.

Back to the Shul for a wrap-up discussion by Rabbi Goldfischer followed by thirty minutes of spirited singing in dancing in celebration of the day.

And the weather cooperated! The prediction of early afternoon rain was wrong and the kids enjoyed a wonderful barbecue lunch—I guess you know that virtually every family in Israel celebrates the day with a barbecue—on our spacious fields. The barbecue was hosted and run, as it is each year, by the Frisch Parents Association and its wonderful volunteers.

NOW THE COMMERCIAL: As you undoubtedly know the Frisch Parents Association Auction is in full swing but time is running out. The Frisch Parents Association’s contribution to your child’s experience at The Frisch School goes far beyond hot dogs and hamburgers. Rav Kook's Lamentation in Jerusalem for our Yom Ha'atzmaut Program

For today's Yom Ha'atzmaut program, our students learned about Rav Avraham Yitzchak Kook’s little-known Hesped (eulogy) for Theodor Herzl through which he attempted to demonstrate, in a Dvar Torah elucidating the roles in our tradition of Mashi’ach Ben Yosef and Mashi’ach Ben David, that religious Zionists should look upon secular Zionism (and, of course, Zionists) as an indispensable ingredient working toward the ultimate redemption of the Jewish People.

  • You can read a translation of Rav Kook's Hesped here and read it in Hebrew here
  • Below view the presentation created about it by Rabbi Tzvi Pittinsky, our Director of Educational technology:

Here is a montage featuring video clips in which members of our faculty acted out scenarios based on the ideas of Rav Kook and a slideshow of the Yom Ha'atzmaut Chagiga and barbeque that followed.:

Yom HaShoa Program at Frisch – Please join us

This coming Thursday morning, April 19th, Frisch will be hosting a special Yom HaShoa program. Mr. Walter Spier, grandfather of our own Rabbi J.Z.Spier, will be sharing his experiences and memories of surviving the concentration camps and of his liberation. For nearly 67 years, Mr. Spier has been hard at work trying to contact the family of U.S. Captain Michael Levy, the American soldier who liberated him from Mathausen. Through many examples of Hashgacha Pratit (Divine providence) that search has come to a successful end. Please feel free to join us Thursday morning in the Frisch Auditorium at 10:20am, as Rabbi Spier and his grandfather take the opportunity to personally express their gratitude to Captain Levy’s family as they all come together for this program.

Cougar Sports Breakfast

The Frisch School Third Annual Cougar Sports Breakfast will take place at Frisch on Sunday morning, April 29th.  You will be receiving your formal invitation in the coming days.  On that day, we will recognize our many sports teams, players and coaches.  We are very excited to have Richard Bernstein as our Guest Speaker.  Mr. Bernstein is a Civil Rights Attorney, Community Advocate and Marathon/Triathlon Athlete.

Frisch is proud to field more than 25 sports teams as part of our athletic program, plus several intramural teams open to all students.  Recently, we held an impromptu celebration “Frisch Paints the Town Red” for the entire student body in honor of our girls' junior varsity and boys’ varsity championship basketball teams.

You can watch our championship highlight videos, created by members of our teams, below:

The Frisch athletic program is an excellent venue for our students to interact with students in other grades.  Friendships are forged through participation in these teams that often last a lifetime.  Several of our alumni have returned to Frisch as coaches of our teams.

Whether you have a child who participates in our sports programs or simply enjoys being a spectator at our games, we would like you to consider becoming a sponsor of this annual breakfast.  Sponsorship will give you the opportunity to show your gratitude to our sports department while raising much needed funds for our sports programs.  Funds raised will be put toward enhancing our indoor and outdoor sports facilities.

Visit donate.frisch.org to show your support for our athletic program.  All sponsors will be acknowledged in our Sports Breakfast program.

We look forward to greeting you at the breakfast as we acknowledge our student athletes.
Sincerely,

Dr. Kalman Stein, Principal
Elaine Weitzman, Executive Director

Mazal Tov to our Ulpaniada Math Contest Finalists!

We are so pleased to announce that Yael Fishel (Gr. 12) and Aliza Hochsztein (Gr. 11) have made it to the final round of the Ulpaniada Math Contest given through Michlalah Jerusalem College. They have been invited to Israel for four days to take the final test and to tour the country through the college. The winners of that last round will be awarded prizes by the Minister of Education, Mr. Gideon Sa'ar. This is an extremely impressive accomplishment which required not only strong math skills but also complex reasoning skills. To put the magnitude of this achievement in perspective, the competition began in the first round with approximately 2000 girls from Israel, USA, Canada, England, South Africa, France and Australia. There will be around 80 girls in the final of which 18 will be coming from outside of Israel especially for the event. That's the top 4%. Wow! We are so proud of them. Kol Hakavod also goes to our Math Chair, Mrs. Sabrina Bernath, and the entire Math Department for their tireless efforts on behalf of our students.

Frisch & the NORPAC Mission

I was planning to send this a week before Purim, not a week before Pesach, but bear with me;

I don't know if there's a midrashic source for this or if it's modern homiletics but I once heard the following question and answer: It seems that Haman gave King Ahashverosh ten thousand silver talents as an inducement to allow him to go ahead with his plan to destroy the Jews of the Persian Empire. DON'T STOP READING: THIS IS NOT AN APPEAL FOR MONEY. Why didn't the Jewish community, which probably was already pretty good at fundraising 2,500 years ago, simply up the ante and offer the King twenty thousand to say "No?" The answer I've heard is that the community couldn't unite even to save themselves: The wealthy wanted each family to pay an equal share, while the masses wanted a graduated tax which expected more from the propertied classes. And their inability to unite almost led to catastrophe.

An area in which our school and community has always been united is in its support of The State of Israel and in the goal to make sure that each Frisch student emerges from high school both with the sense of responsibility and the tools to serve as an advocate for Israel. We, therefore, work with our seniors each year and run our own student lobbying mission to Capitol Hill, and we encourage the parents of our students to participate in the annual NORPAC Mission to Washington and, if possible, to take their children with the.

So once again, we would like to encourage you to take advantage of an opportunity to experience an unforgettable day with your child. On Wednesday, May 9, 2012 NORPAC will be going to Washington, D.C. for its annual Mission. NORPAC is a bi-partisan political action committee with membership residing primarily in the greater metropolitan area and is a single issue PAC with the stated goal of strengthening the U.S./Israel relationship. Although students over 18 years old may join the Mission without a parent accompanying them we stress that the experience of sharing this day with your child of any age is memorable.

The Mission begins early in the morning with a 5:30am bus departure to Washington and return at approximately 9:30pm. Upon arrival participants are addressed by many Senators and Congressmen to brief them on the most current issues concerning the U.S./ Israel relationship. This is great preparation for the meetings with members of congress or and their aides that follow. Participants are pre-grouped into groups of 5-7 people. These small groups remain together and attend meeting in congressional offices throughout the day reinforcing to the members of congress about the many important reasons for the United States to continue to strongly support Israel. All participants receive materials ahead of time to prepare for their advocacy efforts and are encouraged to attend a pre-Mission Sunday morning breakfast briefing on the issues.

Frisch lends its support to this effort by granting an excused absence to any student who attends the Mission. Participants return exhilarated after having experienced the dynamic of democracy and importance of the electorate in our country.

Registration can be done only through the NORPAC website, www.norpac.net. and paid for by any major credit card. If you have any questions, please contact the NORPAC office at 201-788-5133.
