A portion of our proceeds will go to Somaly Mam, an organization that works to end human trafficking and help its survivors create and sustain lives of dignity.

Mayor @CoryBooker gives an Unconventional Dvar Torah- Photos of the Sports Breakfast

Thank you for making The 4th Annual Cougar Sports Breakfast a Success!

It was wonderful to see more than four hundred members of The Frisch School family at Sunday's Annual Sports Breakfast as we came together to show our pride in all of our Frisch athletes and coaches and our gratitude for the support they receive from parents. Not only was the event beautiful, but through our generous sponsors, over $20,000 was raised to benefit Athletics at Frisch!

 Each member of the audience was taken and impressed with Mayor Booker's interesting, amusing and ultimately inspiring talk. All of us at Frisch are so grateful to him for donating his time to be with us. Mayor Booker talked about his own personal growth experiences, from his youth in NJ, to his college football days at Stanford, to his introduction to Judaism that occured at Oxford University. We appreciate his gracious willingness to mingle with the students, parents and coaches after his remarks.

The Yoms @FrischSchool

I know that we’ve  already emailed links which share the sights and sounds of our Yom Ha-Zikaron and Yom Ha-Atzma’ut programs (and also that you are probably on email overload) but I thought I’d just send along a brief synopsis of the programs.

The highlight of the Yom Ha-Zikaron program, which was done with the participation of a delegation of students from Nahariya, was a talk by our alumnus, Andy Eagle (’08), a YU undergraduate who served in Tzahal after his year at yeshiva in Israel. Andy spoke movingly of two aspects of his time in the IDF. First, of the experience of meeting and establishing a relationship with the family of a fallen Chayal in his role as the soldier assigned to stand at his grave in the Har Herzl Military Cemetery on Yom Ha-Zikaron. Then he spoke of Moshe, a wonderful young man in Andy’s unit who was killed last year during a routine patrol at the Gaza border, a patrol that he and Andy had done together dozens of times.

Yom Ha-Atzma’ut began with a Tefillah Chagigit, including a thoroughly inspiring Hallel in which the entire student body participated beautifully and enthusiastically.  After breakfast and some typical Frisch shtick orchestrated by Rabbi Goldfischer and the Ivrit teachers Rabbi Goldfischer introduced the day’s theme--The role of the individual in making history—with an old newsreel (which I had never seen) of the ceremonies involving the transfer of Theodor Herzl’s remains to Israel and the burial on the then newly named Mount Herzl in the early fifties. Each grade then experienced in round robin succession four programs (in random order): 1. The students were shown an ancient film of the Halutzim draining malarial swamps as an introduction to two pivotal figures, A.D. Gordon, the spiritual force behind labor Zionism and the founder of HaPo'el HaTza'ir  and Eliezer Ben Yehuda,  the driving spirit behind the revival of the Hebrew language in the modern era. 2. The question of dual loyalty, particularly as it concerned first-generation American Jews in the early days of the twentieth century, was presented through a speech by Justice Louis Brandeis, one of the earliest American Zionist leaders, to a group of Reform rabbis which for pedagogic reasons we portrayed as a speech to working class Jews on the Lower East Side and the subsequent dialogue with an immigrant who feared that espousal of Zionism would be seen as a lack of commitment to the United States. 3. The presentation of three very different positions about the possibility of a Jewish State: Ahad Ha’am’s advocacy of cultural, but decided non-religious, Zionism; Rav Elchanan Wasserman’s (what we would call today) Haredi approach which combined the conviction that the Redemption was to come only with the arrival of the Messiah and unwillingness to see secular Zionists as anything other than sinners; and the combination of religious orthodoxy and Zionism as advocated by Rabbi Isaac Jacob Reines: the founder of Mizrahi. 4. An introduction to college campus advocacy which began with a video prepared by anti-Israel activists for “Israel Apartheid Week,” and a skit portraying a dialogue between an informed, pro-Israel college student and her roommate, a person who knew virtually nothing about the realities of the Middle East beyond the anti-Israel rhetoric and campaigns on campus. (Special thanks to Rabbi Goldfischer who created and coordinated the entire program and to Rabbis Feldman, Schachter, Bashist, Fleischmann, Jaffe, Ciner and Sher and to Mrs. Jacob and Mrs. Goldfischer who performed the various skits).

We concluded as we do each year with a wonderful outdoor barbecue out on the playing fields, supplied as always by the Frisch Parents Association.   

(What went wrong? The blue & white sheet cake we serve each year at breakfast on Yom Ha-atzma’ut didn’t arrive yesterday. But since yesterday was already a Nidkheh—that is that we were celebrating this year as decided in Israel on the 6^th rather than the 5^th of Iyar—we felt confident that it was also permissible to serve the cake this morning, just one more day late).

NOW THE COMMERCIAL: I cannot think of a better way to conclude the celebration than by signing up (I hope with your son or daughter) for the May 8 NORPAC Mission to Washington.

The Frisch Yom HaShoah program has been dedicated in loving memory of Abraham and Fela Kolat z’l, parents of our librarian, Mrs. Beverly Geller.

The Kolats were Holocaust survivors from Poland. During the war, Mr. Kolat was held in seven different concentration camps, where he was forced to do hard labor with the constant fear of death. Mrs.Kolat was a slave laborer in Gleiwitz,a sub-camp of Auschwitz, from March,1942 to January,1945. She then was on the infamous Death March and was finally liberated in May, 1945. Almost all of their family members perished in the Holocaust.

Abraham and Fela married in 1947. After applying for immigration to both Palestine and the United States, they took the first way out of Germany and came to America in January, 1949. Despite their physical and emotional suffering and their lack of family support, money, or command of the English language, the Kolats were able to rebuild a life committed to Jewish values.

They raised their family (Mrs. Geller and her brother, David) in a home filled with Torah and mitzvoth. They worked long, hard days and were able to create a comfortable home for their family. Abraham and Fela were warm, loving people who doted on their grandchildren, three of whom attended Frisch. They were able to enjoy their family but never forgot those who perished.

It is our hope that the Frisch Yom HaShoah program will help keep alive the stories of Abraham and Fela Kolat and those of other Holocaust survivors so that their suffering and the loss of the Six Million will never be forgotten.

iPad Apps for Students: How to Use Evernote Peek to create study cards to quiz yourself

We are starting a new YouTube series called iPad apps for students. The goal is to showcase a different app in each episode that could be useful for our 9th grade students involved in our 1:1 iPad program and other students with iPads as well.

The first app is Evernote Peek, an easy to use app to create study cards using Evernote. All you need to do is create a review notebook in Evernote in which the title to each note is your study "clue" and the body of the note is your "answer". You can then use Evernote Peek to quiz yourself on your iPad using your Smart Cover to first reveal the clue and then the answer. The Frisch School Middle States Reaccreditation

I am happy to inform you that the visit of the Middle States team has just concluded and we have been informed that it is the team's unanimous recommendation that The Frisch School be reaccredited by the Middle States Association of Schools. The team was impressed with the spirit and dynamism which permeates our campus and with the professionalism and enthusiasm of faculty and staff. What impressed our visitors the most is exactly what impresses all of us at Frisch the most, that is, the intelligence, mentschlichkeit and Ru'ach of our kids and the mutual love and respect the students and the teachers have for one another and for the yeshiva.

Thank you to the members of the Board and parents who participated in various aspects of the study, to the faculty and staff who were so impressive not despite but because they just ran a regular week of school with all the special stuff that goes on in and out of the classroom at Frisch every week.

The Message Behind Frisch's The Alumni

I have been in the midst of helping to coordinate our get-out-the-vote drive for the Avi Chai Foundation's Jewish Day School Video Academy Awards: Alumni Edition. ---Here's my PSA: If you have not already done so, please vote for our entry in this contest by going to video.frisch.org and giving Frisch's The Alumni a "Thumb's Up".--- What I have learned is that this contest is not just a great lesson in digital storytelling and the art of social media but has also been a tremendous boost for our school spirit and a great model for our student's of all the values that we hold dear.

Let me explain. Frisch's entry Frisch's The Alumni is another first class production from our team of talented faculty alumni filmmakers, Rabbi David Goldfischer and Rabbi Jonathan Feldman who in the past have produced such popular hits as The Fiddler on the School and The Sound of Ruach. When you watch the current video side-by-side with the Avenger's Assemble movie trailer it is spoofing- I have embedded both videos below- you realize how clever this video truly is. By featuring twelve alumni who have chosen to rejoin our school as Frisch faculty, this video is a tremendous model for our students of the importance of service and giving back to the Jewish community. The values we preach, we teach and follow ourselves. Full disclosure: I am NOT a Frisch alumnus although many of my friends in high school went to Frisch (I was kind of jealous of them), I have taught in Frisch for eleven years, and now I am the proud parent of two current Frisch students.

During our drive Thursday to get our students to vote, I realized how remarkable a message this is. "Please support your Frisch faculty alumni by voting for our video because one day you will be a Frisch alumnus and they might make a video about you and how you are giving back to the Jewish community!" What an incredible message! And the kids responded and voted and voted. Over 250 student voters in one hour. (The candy we were handing out didn't hurt.) But what our kids were truly voting for was their deep respect for their alumni teachers and their desire some day, in some way to follow in their footsteps.

So please share this video below with your friends and family. Not because we want your vote- although we do, don't forget video.frisch.org- but because in its over-the-top, funny way, it shares such an important message that our Modern Orthodox Jewish world needs now more than ever; the importance of giving back to our Jewish community. This is the ultimate way that we can show our hakarat hatov, thankfulness, for all those who have given so much to make us into committed and thoughtful Jewish individuals.

Yesterday's first ever Engineering Symposium at Frisch

Dear Parents,

What an amazing event we had yesterday at Frisch!  The excitement and enthusiasm of all the students was evident as Frisch held the first ever Engineering Symposium. Attended by over 100 students and faculty from five area schools, this event was the culmination of our science engineering elective. Throughout the year, the passion and energy of the students could be witnessed daily in our engineering lab as students worked diligently in teams under the able guidance of Mrs. Rifkie Silverman to acquire the skills and conceptual understanding of what it means to be an engineer.  This elective course, which was supported by the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education, will be offered to both 9th and 10th graders next year.

As is always the case, our students can best describe what the year was like for them.  Below is an excerpt from an article written by Benjamin Glass (’14).

“Over the course of this year, I have gained an immeasurable amount from our class. At the start of the year, programming was an enigma to me, and potentiometer was a term from science fiction. Today, the secrets of these terms are open to me. Our work in class with Arduino microprocessors has led me to begin learning JAVA on my own, and I will be taking a class in C programming this summer at Columbia. From the students of the Frisch engineering class: a hearty thanks to Mrs. Silverman, who put her all into directing us throughout the year, and to Dr. Furman who helped get the engineering class off the ground along with Mrs. Silverman”
