Message from the President

Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends,

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to you as I begin in my new role as president of the Frisch School Board of Trustees. I am honored to be serving The Frisch School in this capacity, as, like many of you, I know what an incredible place Frisch is and how important it is to our students, their parents, and the Jewish community at large.

As the summer comes to a close and we prepare for the Yamim Noraim. Our students, teachers and staff are returning to Frisch with great anticipation for another very exciting school year. I am sure that you join me in looking forward to an incredibly exciting and productive year for our students.

Over the summer months, our very talented and dedicated administration, faculty and staff, led by Dr. Kalman Stein and Rabbi Eli Ciner, have tirelessly planned for the new school year. New programs, curricula and activities are in place to ensure that our students receive the very best education in both Judaic and Secular studies. Our Transition committee is working closely with Dr Stein and Rabbi Ciner to insure a seamless transition when Rabbi Ciner assumes the position of Principal of our Yeshiva next September. Our lay leaders have also been busy setting up committees to support our professional staff in the most synergistic way possible.

While we are proud of where we are today, we are always striving for improvement. We look to our extended Frisch School family for help and participation. Those parents who are returning to Frisch already know that this is more than just a school – it is a community made up of students and teachers, parents and alumni, grandparents and friends. We are extremely fortunate that many of you have already chosen to contribute your talents in ways that have been extraordinarily beneficial to our students. We thank you for your participation, commitment and shared vision. Many of you have also contributed generously to our various fundraising campaigns. Without your generosity we simply could not continue to do what we do and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those who have not yet become involved, I ask that you give of your time and your resources to Frisch; to volunteer, to participate and to donate.

Tuition alone does not cover all of the expenses associated with operating a wonderful yeshiva like Frisch. Funds are necessary to pay our exceptional faculty and staff, to meet the needs of our scholarship families, to continue to provide amazing programming both inside and outside of the classroom and to maintain our beautiful campus. Our incredible, state-of- the-art campus is also not yet fully funded, and numerous meaningful naming opportunities remain. When Rachel Roth, our Director of Development, or members of the Board of Trustees, call on you later in the year to contribute to our Annual Dinner, the Scholarship fund, the Building Campaign or any of our other special fundraising events, please open your hearts and your checkbooks and respond as generously as you are able.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me ronnie.schlussel@frisch.og or our Director of Development, Rachel Roth rachel.roth@frisch.org We welcome your comments and suggestions.

I wish each and every one of you a Shanah Tova U’Metukah.

Ronnie Schlussel,

President

Thank you from The Frisch School Drama Society

Thanks to all who helped to make
"30 Years of Drama at Frisch - A tribute to Rabbi Dr. John Krug"
a fabulous event!
The Foreigner showcased the incredible talent of the students that participate in The Frisch Drama Society and it was wonderful to welcome back alumni and friends from throughout the years. We came together to celebrate the huge impact that Rabbi Dr. Krug has had on Frisch students over the past 30 years.

Why do you give?

Why do you give to the Abraham Kremer Memorial Scholarship Campaign at The Frisch School?

"Frisch has been our partner in laying a solid foundation for our children's Jewish future.  Our three children have graduated Frisch and are each in different stages of life, with each taking their own path.  Yet the constants in their lives that remain are their connection and devotion to the Jewish community, Torah, Israel and to family.  They were each leaders of the Jewish community on their college campuses. The middot that were nutured and cultivated at Frisch remained with them throughout their college years and beyond. Their connection to Frisch, both the school itself as well as the strong bonds they developed there, endures."

Using the Shakespeare iPad App with my 9th Grade English Class

I wanted to share with everyone my experience reading Macbeth using the Shakespeare in Bits app.  For the past two years I have struggled to teach Macbeth to my A-level 9th graders.  They could not understand the language on their own and could not understand some of the older productions of play.  Until now I have not found much use for the iPads in my literature class, but this app changed everything.

The app contains an animated version of the entire play, with professional actors doing the voices.  While watching the animation, the sidebar has the text, highlighting the passages as they are being performed.   In addition to the text and the animation, the app has notes and comments about those passages.  The app allows the reader to click on specific difficult words and explains those words.  This app allowed the students to read and experience Shakespeare on their own.  They were assigned one or two scenes a night, which we discussed in class the next day.  I had the students keep a reading log; they had to choose key passages and explain the importance of the passage to the plot, theme, or character development.  We finished reading the play about a week ago.  I got positive feedback from all of the students.  All of them agreed that they would not have been able to understand the play without the app.  In addition, they all felt that this was the most useful app they have used on their iPads.

Instead of having the students write another essay, I wanted to try something different.  I wanted an assignment that would show me that they understood the play, but also allow them to be creative and “active learners.”  Right now my students are finishing their own modern day version of Macbeth.  I explained to the students that many of Shakespeare’s plays have been modified, adapted, and modernized.  We discussed how many romances are based off of the premise from Romeo and Juliet.  I even pointed out to them that The Lion King was really an adaptation of Hamlet.  In groups of two, the students are developing a modernized Macbeth.  They must explain the premise of their adaptation, rewrite portions of the script, create a wardrobe, compile a soundtrack, and choose their dream cast.  The students have come up with some really creative ideas.  One group has chosen to rewrite Macbeth as a Western.  Another group has chosen Macbeth a police drama (instead of the witches, Macbeth receives the “prophecy” from fortune cookies).  I am really impressed with the students’ engagement and excitement.

While I’m aware that this particular project could be done without an iPad, my students would not have had the foundation they now have without the app.   I think this particular app allows the A-level type student to do more creative and higher order thinking assignments.

I am excited to use the app again next year with my 9th grade.

Why do you give? #FrischScholarshipCampaign

"Why do you give to The Frisch School Scholarship Campaign?"

"We gave to the Frisch Scholarship Campaign because we believe that high quality Jewish education is key to Jewish continuity. While we wish we could give even more, we believe that consistent giving will have a long-term impact. We believe that as part of a larger collective, we can, and should, make a difference."
                      -Patty and Sam Borodach
Parents of Benjamin '10, Sarah '12, Steven '14 and Yosef '19

"The Frisch School is a gift to all students who are lucky enough to enter its doors. As a guidance counselor and teacher, it is a joy to see the personal, professional, academic and spiritual growth and development of our students over the course of four years. The Frisch Scholarship Campaign helps make this possible for many students who otherwise would not have this opportunity."                                                               -Rhonda Kamen
Guidance Counselor and Spanish Teacher at Frisch

"We are so fortunate that our children can benefit from the unbelievable educational program offered by the Frisch School, as they learn and develop relationships with the unparalleled and talented staff who are constantly there for our children.  Being able to contribute funds to help provide this opportunity to other children gives us great pride. Jewish education is at the forefront of our priorities, as it helps ensure that our own children, as well as others, grow in both their religious and academic achievements while attending our incredible yeshiva."

Mayor @CoryBooker gives an Unconventional Dvar Torah- Photos of the Sports Breakfast

Thank you for making The 4th Annual Cougar Sports Breakfast a Success!

It was wonderful to see more than four hundred members of The Frisch School family at Sunday's Annual Sports Breakfast as we came together to show our pride in all of our Frisch athletes and coaches and our gratitude for the support they receive from parents. Not only was the event beautiful, but through our generous sponsors, over $20,000 was raised to benefit Athletics at Frisch!

Each member of the audience was taken and impressed with Mayor Booker's interesting, amusing and ultimately inspiring talk. All of us at Frisch are so grateful to him for donating his time to be with us. Mayor Booker talked about his own personal growth experiences, from his youth in NJ, to his college football days at Stanford, to his introduction to Judaism that occured at Oxford University. We appreciate his gracious willingness to mingle with the students, parents and coaches after his remarks.

Thank you for joining us at what was truly an inspiring morning.

The Yoms @FrischSchool

I know that we’ve  already emailed links which share the sights and sounds of our Yom Ha-Zikaron and Yom Ha-Atzma’ut programs (and also that you are probably on email overload) but I thought I’d just send along a brief synopsis of the programs.

The highlight of the Yom Ha-Zikaron program, which was done with the participation of a delegation of students from Nahariya, was a talk by our alumnus, Andy Eagle (’08), a YU undergraduate who served in Tzahal after his year at yeshiva in Israel. Andy spoke movingly of two aspects of his time in the IDF. First, of the experience of meeting and establishing a relationship with the family of a fallen Chayal in his role as the soldier assigned to stand at his grave in the Har Herzl Military Cemetery on Yom Ha-Zikaron. Then he spoke of Moshe, a wonderful young man in Andy’s unit who was killed last year during a routine patrol at the Gaza border, a patrol that he and Andy had done together dozens of times.

Yom Ha-Atzma’ut began with a Tefillah Chagigit, including a thoroughly inspiring Hallel in which the entire student body participated beautifully and enthusiastically.  After breakfast and some typical Frisch shtick orchestrated by Rabbi Goldfischer and the Ivrit teachers Rabbi Goldfischer introduced the day’s theme--The role of the individual in making history—with an old newsreel (which I had never seen) of the ceremonies involving the transfer of Theodor Herzl’s remains to Israel and the burial on the then newly named Mount Herzl in the early fifties. Each grade then experienced in round robin succession four programs (in random order): 1. The students were shown an ancient film of the Halutzim draining malarial swamps as an introduction to two pivotal figures, A.D. Gordon, the spiritual force behind labor Zionism and the founder of HaPo'el HaTza'ir  and Eliezer Ben Yehuda,  the driving spirit behind the revival of the Hebrew language in the modern era. 2. The question of dual loyalty, particularly as it concerned first-generation American Jews in the early days of the twentieth century, was presented through a speech by Justice Louis Brandeis, one of the earliest American Zionist leaders, to a group of Reform rabbis which for pedagogic reasons we portrayed as a speech to working class Jews on the Lower East Side and the subsequent dialogue with an immigrant who feared that espousal of Zionism would be seen as a lack of commitment to the United States. 3. The presentation of three very different positions about the possibility of a Jewish State: Ahad Ha’am’s advocacy of cultural, but decided non-religious, Zionism; Rav Elchanan Wasserman’s (what we would call today) Haredi approach which combined the conviction that the Redemption was to come only with the arrival of the Messiah and unwillingness to see secular Zionists as anything other than sinners; and the combination of religious orthodoxy and Zionism as advocated by Rabbi Isaac Jacob Reines: the founder of Mizrahi. 4. An introduction to college campus advocacy which began with a video prepared by anti-Israel activists for “Israel Apartheid Week,” and a skit portraying a dialogue between an informed, pro-Israel college student and her roommate, a person who knew virtually nothing about the realities of the Middle East beyond the anti-Israel rhetoric and campaigns on campus. (Special thanks to Rabbi Goldfischer who created and coordinated the entire program and to Rabbis Feldman, Schachter, Bashist, Fleischmann, Jaffe, Ciner and Sher and to Mrs. Jacob and Mrs. Goldfischer who performed the various skits).

We concluded as we do each year with a wonderful outdoor barbecue out on the playing fields, supplied as always by the Frisch Parents Association.

(What went wrong? The blue & white sheet cake we serve each year at breakfast on Yom Ha-atzma’ut didn’t arrive yesterday. But since yesterday was already a Nidkheh—that is that we were celebrating this year as decided in Israel on the 6th rather than the 5th of Iyar—we felt confident that it was also permissible to serve the cake this morning, just one more day late).

NOW THE COMMERCIAL: I cannot think of a better way to conclude the celebration than by signing up (I hope with your son or daughter) for the May 8 NORPAC Mission to Washington.
