Mazal Tov to our Ulpaniada Math Contest Finalists!
We are so pleased to announce that Yael Fishel (Gr. 12) and Aliza Hochsztein (Gr. 11) have made it to the final round of the Ulpaniada Math Contest given through Michlalah Jerusalem College. They have been invited to Israel for four days to take the final test and to tour the country through the college. The winners of that last round will be awarded prizes by the Minister of Education, Mr. Gideon Sa'ar. This is an extremely impressive accomplishment which required not only strong math skills but also complex reasoning skills. To put the magnitude of this achievement in perspective, the competition began in the first round with approximately 2000 girls from Israel, USA, Canada, England, South Africa, France and Australia. There will be around 80 girls in the final of which 18 will be coming from outside of Israel especially for the event. That's the top 4%. Wow! We are so proud of them. Kol Hakavod also goes to our Math Chair, Mrs. Sabrina Bernath, and the entire Math Department for their tireless efforts on behalf of our students.

Frisch & the NORPAC Mission
I was planning to send this a week before Purim, not a week before Pesach, but bear with me;
I don't know if there's a midrashic source for this or if it's modern homiletics but I once heard the following question and answer: It seems that Haman gave King Ahashverosh ten thousand silver talents as an inducement to allow him to go ahead with his plan to destroy the Jews of the Persian Empire. DON'T STOP READING: THIS IS NOT AN APPEAL FOR MONEY. Why didn't the Jewish community, which probably was already pretty good at fundraising 2,500 years ago, simply up the ante and offer the King twenty thousand to say "No?" The answer I've heard is that the community couldn't unite even to save themselves: The wealthy wanted each family to pay an equal share, while the masses wanted a graduated tax which expected more from the propertied classes. And their inability to unite almost led to catastrophe.
An area in which our school and community has always been united is in its support of The State of Israel and in the goal to make sure that each Frisch student emerges from high school both with the sense of responsibility and the tools to serve as an advocate for Israel. We, therefore, work with our seniors each year and run our own student lobbying mission to Capitol Hill, and we encourage the parents of our students to participate in the annual NORPAC Mission to Washington and, if possible, to take their children with the.
So once again, we would like to encourage you to take advantage of an opportunity to experience an unforgettable day with your child. On Wednesday, May 9, 2012 NORPAC will be going to Washington, D.C. for its annual Mission. NORPAC is a bi-partisan political action committee with membership residing primarily in the greater metropolitan area and is a single issue PAC with the stated goal of strengthening the U.S./Israel relationship. Although students over 18 years old may join the Mission without a parent accompanying them we stress that the experience of sharing this day with your child of any age is memorable.
The Mission begins early in the morning with a 5:30am bus departure to Washington and return at approximately 9:30pm. Upon arrival participants are addressed by many Senators and Congressmen to brief them on the most current issues concerning the U.S./ Israel relationship. This is great preparation for the meetings with members of congress or and their aides that follow. Participants are pre-grouped into groups of 5-7 people. These small groups remain together and attend meeting in congressional offices throughout the day reinforcing to the members of congress about the many important reasons for the United States to continue to strongly support Israel. All participants receive materials ahead of time to prepare for their advocacy efforts and are encouraged to attend a pre-Mission Sunday morning breakfast briefing on the issues.
Frisch lends its support to this effort by granting an excused absence to any student who attends the Mission. Participants return exhilarated after having experienced the dynamic of democracy and importance of the electorate in our country.
Registration can be done only through the NORPAC website, www.norpac.net. and paid for by any major credit card. If you have any questions, please contact the NORPAC office at 201-788-5133.

Global Learning @FrischSchool
This week our global world has been transformed into a little village with a one room schoolhouse through the hard work of our teachers both from Frisch and our twinning school and the help of technology. Below is a description of three programs that occurred on Monday and Tuesday.
9th Grade Identity Wiki with students from the Alon School in Nahariya, Israel
On Monday morning in Nahariya Israel, Rabbi Pittinsky, our Director of Educational Technology, taught a lesson to 9th grade students at the Alon School on the theme of Personal Identity. The lesson was based on the poem לכל איש יש שם by זֶלדָה which students in our 9th grade Hebrew classes and the students in Nahariya are both learning. Students in Morah Dafna Zilberschmid's classes have been discussing the question of how our name and the influences in our life form our identity and this question was continued by the Alon students on the Frisch wiki. More than 40 students in Israel introduced themselves in the wiki discussion, describing their name, family, hobbies, and answering the question of whether they would be willing to "change" their name in order to fit into a new group of friends, an important one for adolescents entering high school. This discussion will be continued on the Frisch Wiki by Morah Dafna's classes and hopefully will lead to continued dialogue and joint learning in the future. We thank the Partnership 2Gether project of the Jewish Agency and the Jewish Federation of Northern NJ for subsidizing Rabbi Pittinsky's trip to our twinning schools in Nahariya.
Skyping between our 10th Grade Frisch Students and Ethiopian Students from the Yavneh School in Israel
Later on Monday, a group of sophomores, under the direction of Morah Dafna, Skyped with Ethiopian Jews in Israel. Sophomores Marni Loffman, Isabelle Berman, Talia Schabes, Kayla Schiffer and Ariela Rivkin have each been matched with an Ethiopian student with whom they will correspond. The program emerged from the Frisch Africa Encounter, during which time the students learned about the obstacles the Ethiopian community faced when coming to Israel and is still grappling with. The students expressed interest in developing relationships with Ethiopian students in Israel. Mrs. Tikvah Wiener, our English Department Chair and Coordinator of Interdisciplinary Studies, contacted her sister Mrs. Smadar Goldstein, who ran the webinar on Ethiopian Jewry during the month the sophomores learned about Africa, and Mrs. Goldstein made the "shidduch" between Frisch and the Ethiopian students. The students will now begin discussions on their own with their "pen pals" and hopefully form relationships with their new acquaintances. Both the Frisch students and the Ethiopians will also get to improve their language skills, the Ethiopians by conversing in English and the Frisch students by speaking in Hebrew. Thank you to Morah Dafna Zilberschmid our Hebrew Department Chair and Morah Sarah Barak our partner from the Yavneh School in Israel for making this wonderful program work! Thank you to Rabbi Tzvi Pittinsky and Mr. Chris Perez for making sure the technological parts of the program ran smoothly!
Video Conference between our 11th Grade Students and Students in the Ulpanat Harel School about last week's Holocaust Integration Program
On Tuesday, students from our 11th Grade shared a class discussion by video conference with their counterparts in the Ulpanat Harel School in Nahariya about the topic of the Holocaust. This program was an opportunity for follow-up reflections about the topics studied in last week's Integrated Day of Learning on the Holocaust which took place both at The Frisch School and at Ulpanat Harel.
Students discussed the following questions in both Hebrew and English:
1. How could people remain human under inhuman conditions?
2. What can we do today as Jews in America and in Israel in light of the way America and Palestine responded to the holocaust?
3. What are proper ways of commemorating the Holocaust?
Talking to each other via Skype, students were able to form one global classroom as they shared their thoughts. Time went by so quickly that there was a demand for follow-up so both our students in Frisch and the Ulpana will be continuing the conversation through asynchronous discussion on the Frisch Wiki. We would like to thank Mrs. Dafna Zilberschmid and Mrs. Tikvah Wiener were facilitating this discussion from Frisch and Mrs. Mercedes Hadad and Rabbi Yehuda Rosenberg for facilitating the program at Ulpanat Harel. As well, thanks are owed to Mr. Chris Perez our Network Administrator for his technical support at Frisch and Rabbi Tzvi Pittinsky for his technical support at the Ulpana in Nahariya. This program also would not have been possible without our Partnership 2Gether Program sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Northern NJ.
We are looking forward to continuing our many twinning programs as we transform our global community into a global village with a single classroom through the help of technology.

Integrated Day of Learning on the Holocaust
![]() |
Our Juniors are watching the award winning film, Life is Beautiful, in order to lead to a discussion of whether it is appropriate to create fiction and/or comedy about the Shoah. |
Yesterday at Frisch was the juniors’ integrated day of learning. The topic for the day arose from the Hebrew Language department, whose eleventh grade curriculum is on the Shoah. In fact, for the junior integration day, we were able to arrange, through Mrs. Dafna Zilberschmid, head of the Frisch Hebrew Language department, a partnership with Ulpanat Harel, a school in Nahariyah. Frisch and Ulpanat Harel planned our Holocaust integration days together and are following the same curriculum. Next week, Rabbi Pittinsky will be in Israel and will Skype with us at Frisch from The Ulpana, enabling students in both schools to share their thoughts about the integration day.
The topic of the Shoah also connects well with the junior theme for the year, Conflict. In fact, Rabbi Ciner introduced the day, explaining to the juniors that becoming more mature means grappling with deeply troubling issues, such as the Holocaust, on a complex level. Doing so was the aim of the day.
To begin the program, the juniors watched Life is Beautiful, a fable about the Shoah. Five different sessions on the Holocaust followed:
English: Dr. Anne Berkman, Mrs. Ruth Wang-Birnbaum, Rabbi Daniel Rosen
Last week, students were assigned “The Shawl” by Cynthia Ozick, a short story about the Holocaust. After watching the fictional, even “comic” film about the Holocaust, students then debated whether one should create fictitious stories about the Holocaust.
American History: Mrs. Betty Kaplan, Mr. Josh Gotlieb, Mr. Peter Tamburro, Mr. Anthony diBartolo
American history teachers covered the controversial issue of whether Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the American Jewish community did enough to help European Jewry during World War II. Although Roosevelt was once seen unequivocally as the Jews’ savior, recent research has thrown that idea into question.
Talmud: Rabbi Yaakov Blau, Rabbi Asher Bush, Rabbi Michael Zauderer, Rabbi Sheldon Morris, Rabbi Gedaliah Jaffe
Responsa from the Holocaust is heartbreaking and yet inspiring. Students saw the incredible level of devotion Jews had to observing halakha and keeping their faith alive even in the midst of the fiery cauldron of the Shoah. With our school in Israel, we decided to focus on responsa that have to do with making a Kiddush Hashem, but some Talmud teachers here also added teshuvot about Pesach, as students are learning Pesachim this year.
Hebrew Language: Morah Miriam Bar-Oz, Morah Ella Regev, Morah Dafna Zilberschmid, Morah Ronit Cole
The Ulpana in Israel visited a museum, Shem Olam, that not only takes one through the experience of the Shoah from a historical angle, but also grapples with the theological questions the Shoah raises, such as how could God allow the Holocaust to occur and why do bad things happen to good people? The Hebrew Language department began this conversation at Frisch through the poem, “Akeidat Yitzchak,” by a Hebrew poet named Itzik, who felt, as other Jews did, that God had allowed His children to be sacrificed, had not replaced us, as He did with Yitzchak in the Torah, with a ram.
Jewish Philosophy: Dr. Shira Weiss, Morah Racheli Weiss, Rabbi Tzvi Pittinsky, Mrs. Tikvah Wiener
Why do bad things happen to good people? Students continued the discussion of theodicy in a session on Jewish philosophy, during which they discovered philosopher Viktor Frankl’s and the Rav’s responses to suffering: that we cannot fully know why or how evil happens, but we can transform ourselves into better people and the world into a better place, by saying that we will not inflict suffering but will instead work to end it.
Wrap-up session:
A film clip from the movie Skokie, about the Nazis’ desire to march in Illinois, served as a wrap-up for the day’s classes and transitioned students into their facilitated discussion time. Students talked out the day’s issues with Rabbi Neil Fleischmann, Rabbi Eli Ciner, Rabbi JZ Spier, Rabbi Michael Zauderer and Mrs. Tikvah Wiener, analyzing whether Life if Beautiful should have been made; what we can do today to make sure world Jewry is safe and alleviate the suffering of all peoples; and even whether forgiveness is possible or necessary.
Student response:
Students then finished the day by taking a survey about the day’s lessons. Here are some of their responses:
On theodicies:
“I don't think that anything will ever make me understand why the Holocaust happened.”
On whether Evan Kauffmann, an American Jew, should play for the national German hockey team:
“The Holocaust was a long time ago so I am not saying we should forget about it, but if this guy wants to play hockey for [the Germans] then it’s up to him. I don't know if I was asked to play hockey for them, I would be able to say yes to the Germans. For example, people buy German-made cars. Is that right???”
On what session or idea was most moving:
“Hearing about the difficult Halachic choices the Jews had to make, and their stories of what they did was the most moving. During our Talmud class, we read a story about what lengths Jews went to observe the mitzvah of matzah on Passover.”
Thanks to all the teachers who worked so hard to prepare meaningful and unique lessons for today; to Mrs. Beverly Geller, for being, as always, an amazing resource for the teachers; to Mrs. Betty Kaplan, for the many enhancements she made to the program; and to Mrs. Lila Korn for her contributions. Finally, Rabbi Tzvi Pittinsky worked tirelessly to create today’s program; he is an invaluable member of the Frisch community.
We dedicate our day of Holocaust learning to the survivors who experienced the atrocities of the Shoah and to the kedoshim who perished in its flames.
